The CGT calls for a moratorium on the opening of the last juvenile prison

The CGT called Wednesday a "rethink" the operation of juvenile correctional institutions (EPM) following the highly critical report of the National Commission of Ethics of Security (NSDC) on the suicide of a minor to the EPM of Meyzieu (Rhone).

"The CNDS vehemently condemns the attitude of executives of the EPM Meyzieu, which is not a surprise to the CGT denouncing the authoritarian drift for months," wrote the union in a statement.

The CGT "demand once again that the operation of EPM is delivered flat" and called for "a moratorium on opening the last EPM" scheduled for the end of the year in Seine-et-Marne, bringing to seven the number of new juvenile prisons open from June 2007.

In a notice sent to the Chancellery, the CNDS noted "serious deficiencies" from the direction of the EPM Meyzieu after the suicide of a minor February 16, who had already made four suicide attempts in the previous week.

The death had sparked a controversy over prison conditions in the EPM accused by unions of educators and supervisors of "trivializing the confinement" of minors while the Minister of Justice Rachida Dati presents them as "a tool well adapted to new forms of crime "for young people.
